FAQ

What is Counselling Psychology? How is it different to Clinical Psychology?

Counselling Psychology is a specialty in the field of psychology. It is concerned with integrating psychological theory and research with therapeutic practice. Counselling Psychologists work with a wide range of mental health difficulties, tailoring the psychological formulation and therapeutic approach to the individual client.

In practice, Counselling and Clinical Psychologists look very similar. They are both highly skilled professionals trained in the assessment and therapy of mental distress. The main difference is in the training routes and philosophical underpinnings of each specialty. Counselling Psychologists incorporate the scientist- practitioner and reflective practitioner philosophies. In Counselling Psychology there is a strong focus on the therapeutic relationship and the subjective experience of the client’s distress, as well as to psychological theory and research.

What happens in the first meeting?

The goal of our first meeting is to discuss and evaluate your needs and decide whether we can work together therapeutically. The session may include a discussion on your reasons for seeking therapy and what you would like to achieve through our work together.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions you may need will depend on the treatment plan that we will agree on at the initial meeting. I offer both short-term (8-12 sessions) and long-term (open-ended) therapy, depending on your goals and needs.
